SEND

All Lambeth maintained schools and nurseries have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with a Special Educational Need and/or Disabilities being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible, where families want this to happen.

The school will meet the needs of children in the following SEND areas:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, mental and emotional health
  • Sensory /physical
  • Independence and Community Involvement (as stated in EHCPs)

The information below details the offer within the school and ways in which parents, children and young people may access the support required.

Sunnyhill School is a diverse, inclusive community and we celebrate this at every opportunity!  Sunnyhill values the contribution that every child can make and welcomes our different cultures, religions and abilities.  We are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all of our pupils.

All our children are special and have needs.  Some children have more difficulties and need extra support and different learning activities, in addition to what we provide for all the children.  These are our SEND children.  They have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.  All our children are valued, respected and equal members of the school.  Every effort is made to ensure that SEND children are fully integrated into mainstream classes and play and learn alongside their peers.  SEND children have full access to the National Curriculum.  Adaptions to the environment and curriculum are made, when necessary, to meet the SEND children’s needs.

As such, provision for pupils with SEND is a matter for the school as a whole. “All teachers and key workers are teachers of pupils with SEND”.

Our SPECIAL NEEDS AIMS:

  • To enable every pupil to experience success.
  • To ensure that all pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, including the Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum where appropriate.
  • To provide a differentiated curriculum appropriate to the individual’s needs and ability.
  • To ensure the identification of all pupils requiring SEND provision as early as possible in their school career.
  • To ensure that SEND pupils take as full a part as possible in all school activities.
  • To ensure that SEND pupils are involved, where practicable, in decisions affecting their future SEND provision.
  • To work in partnership with parents to enable them to make an active contribution to the education of their child.

Whilst many factors contribute to the range of difficulties experienced by some children, we believe that much can be done to overcome them by parents, teachers and pupils working together.
