Religious Education

At Sunnyhill, our Religious Education curriculum aims to foster respect, understanding and appreciation for the diverse beliefs, traditions and values that are represented in our community and beyond. Through the use of Jigsaw Discovery RE we have adopted an enquiry based approach which encourages curiosity and critical thinking. Religious Education is a statutory subject and contributes to the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and British values agendas.

Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Humanism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism are taught throughout the school. As children revisit religions and progress through the year groups, they are required to retain previous knowledge and apply this to use their critical thinking skills to engage in respectful dialogue and personal reflection. This approach does not attempt to persuade but to promote empathy and respect for others, regardless of religion and belief.

Pupils are supported to be mindful when discussing religion to cultivate a sense of awareness and purpose and be present in the moment.  Mindfulness enables pupils to open their minds to building self-awareness and skills of reflection as they explore ethical and moral questions such as What are the best ways for a Muslim to show commitment to God? What is the best way for a Buddhist to live a good life? Has Christmas lost its true meaning?

To establish a respectful, safe and positive learning environment based on open and trusting relationships between all members of the class, we all agree to the Jigsaw RE charter:

 Enrichment

At Sunnyhill we believe in the importance of developing and extending the curriculum through a wide range of purposeful enrichment opportunities.  These opportunities include; educational visits, visiting speakers,  sports competitions, after school clubs, music recitals and school exhibitions.  Through these experiences we want our pupils to:

  • look at subjects in more depth
  • develop their interests and talents
  • learn life skills that will equip them to be responsible, respectful and active citizens.
