Mathematics

By the end of primary school, Sunnyhill pupils will be confident, competent and successful mathematicians who achieve fluency and have an ability to solve problems and think mathematically.

We expect our pupils to:

• Develop fluency in mental maths - number bonds, times table and division facts
• Become competent in applying number skills to increasingly complex maths problems;
• Work in a systematic way
• Communicate confidently using mathematical language.

How Maths is taught at Sunnyhill:

At Sunnyhill, we use the White Rose Maths scheme from Year 1 to Year 6. White Rose is designed to give sufficient time for maths topics to be explored and concepts to be understood in depth.   We use flashbacks which support children’s recall of previously learnt topics by revising something the children learned in the previous lesson, last week and last month or year.

In the early years and KS1, pupils develop fluency through a short daily session called Mastering Number. The programme aims to strengthen the understanding of number, and fluency with number facts, among children in Reception and Years 1 and 2.

From Year 1 to Year 6, all teachers using guided practice to secure a mathematical process at the start of the lesson, which is then applied to word problems. All pupils work from the same starting point with more complex problems applied according to pupils’ ability to access them. We do not stream or set pupils in maths - all pupils work together in mixed groups and access learning at their own pace.

Pupils gain understanding in stages, using ‘concrete’ resources such as counters, cubes, place value counters and diennes to represent numbers. They then use their own representations known as ‘pictorial’ to support understanding. When they no longer require this support, pupils will move into ‘abstract’ concepts, applying known facts and processes.

Outdoor learning: By taking learning and the classroom outside, it gives children opportunities to apply their learning in their natural environment - an approach we value at Sunnyhill.

Financial Education: At Sunnyhill, we teach pupils about financial education, focusing on the basics of money management: budgeting, saving, debt, investing, and giving. This is a particular focus of maths week.
