History
At Sunnyhill, we meet the ambition of the National Curriculum through the theme of 'civilisation'. We foster an understanding of the diverse cultures and ways of life that have shaped societies throughout history. Through an exploration of London, Britain and global civilisations, pupils develop the knowledge of historical chronology and significant events they need to understand human history from ancient times to the modern era.
To embed a strong sense of chronology and understanding of civilisation, history is taught through the key themes of:
- Significant People & Events;
- Everyday Lives of Ordinary People;
- Structure of Society;
- Religion & Rituals; and
- Legacy.
These themes are repeated through the history topics from EYFS to year 6.
We have carefully selected a curriculum which reflects the Sunnyhill community, supporting pupils to recognise the reciprocal influences between Britain and the wider world, fostering an understanding of how cultures have interacted and evolved over time.
Enrichment
At Sunnyhill we believe in the importance of developing and extending the curriculum through a wide range of purposeful enrichment opportunities. These opportunities include; educational visits, visiting speakers, sports competitions, after school clubs, music recitals and school exhibitions. Through these experiences we want our pupils to:
- look at subjects in more depth
- develop their interests and talents
- learn life skills that will equip them to be responsible, respectful and active citizens.
