Geography

At Sunnyhill School, our geography curriculum is designed to enable a deep understanding of both physical and human geography, spanning from the local environment of Streatham to the broader context of the United Kingdom and the world at large. Our aim is to cultivate a meaningful appreciation of location, place, and identity, with an emphasis on establishing connections from a local to a global scale, placing the pupils at the center of their learning journey.

Our geography curriculum intends to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.  Children will be equipped with an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and environment and will be able to recall key facts to build on knowledge about the world. Topics are carefully selected in order to progressively deepen knowledge and understanding, moving from the familiar and concrete (e.g. daily weather patterns) to the unfamiliar and abstract (e.g. climate and biomes). Fieldwork is at the heart of our geography curriculum.  Children use a range of maps, atlases, globes and aerial images so that geography map and fieldwork skills are systematically developed.  We have carefully sequenced these essential skills.  

Weaving through our geography curriculum is the systematic development of the disciplinary knowledge of: asking questions, collecting, analysing & interpreting data through fieldwork; interpreting maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs; communicating geographical information in variety of ways, evaluating and debating ideas and the impact of processes, phenomena and humans on the world. 

Within the context of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths), children at Sunnyhill explore  the connections between the vital physical and human processes of earth, recognising the urgent need to initiate change. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a guiding framework, enabling children to have a deep knowledge of the issues our planet is facing and how our pupils can be the catalysts of change.

Enrichment 

At Sunnyhill we believe in the importance of developing and extending the curriculum through a wide range of purposeful enrichment opportunities.  These opportunities include; educational visits, visiting speakers,  sports competitions, after school clubs, music recitals and school exhibitions.  Through these experiences we want our pupils to:

look at subjects in more depth
develop their interests and talents
learn life skills that will equip them to be responsible, respectful and active citizens.
